Malaysia arrests five for attempt on Maldives president

  • Five Maldivian nationals were arrested for suspected involvement in the failed assassination attempt on Maldives President Abdullah Yameen last month, Malaysian police said on Friday. All the suspects were deported to their original country, media reports quoted Malaysian police chief Khalid Abu Bakar as saying in a statement. The police counter-terrorism unit arrested a 47-year-old Maldives national who worked as an "investment ambassador" during a raid on a condominium in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, the statement said. Four other Maldives nationals, including two men and two women aged between 28 and 38, were also arrested, it added. Police said the operation was based on the cooperation with Maldives authorities.
