Lula Withdraws from Presidential Election

  • Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the former Brazil President, has pulled out of the presidential election race which is due next month. Lula, who is currently serving a 12-year sentence, has been barred by the country's top electoral court from contesting. He has been convicted of corruption. The announcement was made outside the police headquarters, the one where he is jailed. The decision has come just a few days after there was a stabbing of a far-right candidate at a rally.

Despite being jailed, Lula is popular among the people. About 40% people in a survey said that they would vote for him.
