Longest and deepest rail tunnel to officially open in Switzerland

  • The longest and deepest rail tunnel of the world will be officially opened in Switzerland. It took nearly two decades to complete the 57 km long tunnel. The tunnel will provide a high-speed rail link between northern and southern Europe. Currently, Japan's Seikan rail tunnel, which is 53.9 km, is the longest in the world. French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi will be attending the opening of the tunnel.
