London City Introduces Steep Emission Charges
April 20 , 2019
London in the United Kingdom has become the first city in the world to enforce a 24x7 Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). Recognizing that vehicular emission has brought about a public health emergency, which contributes to an escalation in asthma, cancer and dementia cases, a daily charge of £12.50 (around $16) has been imposed for some category of two wheelers and four wheelers entering the central part of the city. The charge for trucks, buses is a steep £100 ($130). To begin with, the ULEZ will cover the same area as the Congestion Charge. From 2021 onwards, it is slated to expand to cover more extensive areas. It is hoped that such additional financial charges will discourage people from bringing their vehicles into the central part of the city.
