Liu Hong Creates New World Record in 50km Walking Race

  • Liu Hong (the Chinese athlete and Rio Olympics race walk champion) has set a new world record in the 50 km walk. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has confirmed that Liu has become the first female walker to complete the 50km walking race under 4-hours. The 31-year old athlete completed the race in 3:59:15. The new record was set on Saturday during the Chinese Race Walk Grand Prix in Huangshan. The earlier record in this 50 km segment was held by another Chinese athlete Liang Rui, who completed the stretch in 4:04:36. After the new record, Liu Hong now holds the world record for 20km as well as 50km walking races. She clocked 1:24:38 in the 20km walking race in Spain’s La Coruna, back in 2015.
