Kurds inch closer to independence referendum
July 4 , 2014
With the crisis in Iraq escalating, the country’s partition looks like a real possibility after Massoud Barzani, president of the autonomous Kurdish region, asked legislators to begin drawing plans for a referendum on independence.
Barzani said the time had come for the Kurds to “determine our fate” and the community should not wait for “other people” to decide its fate.
He said he did not feel bound by the constitution of Iraq any longer. The Kurdish leader said this was the right moment “to tell the world what we want.”
