Spain's King has stepped down after four decades at the age of 76.
Juan Carlos has handed his throne to son Prince Felipe and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced it calling him "a tireless defender" of their interests.
The BBC notes that Carlos has been one of the most popular monarchs of the world, but thinks that "a new generation must be at the forefront" now. He was crowned in 1975 and has faced his share of controversy in the recent years.
