Key Paraguayan rebel leader killed

  • Paraguayan authorities say that Albino Jara, a key rebel leader, has been killed during a shootout on Tuesday, January 6, according to media reports.

Jara, the head of the Armed Peasant Association (ACA), was killed in a forested area close to Cuero Fresco town, the government reportedly said.

The ACA is a splinter group of the left-wing Paraguayan People's Army. The state considers both groups to be criminal gangs.

Paraguaya's President Horacio Cartes has pledged to crack down on rebel groups.
