Kenyan MPs agree to salary cut
June 13 , 2013
Kenyan MPs agreed on Wednesday to a $30,000 salary cut, according to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
MPs will now be paid $45,000, down from $75,000, following national outrage over the issue.
The move comes after MPs last month voted for an annual salary of $120,000, against the wishes of the SRC and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kenya’s MPs are among the highest paid in the world. The average income in Kenya is around $1,800 a year.
In Kenya, the SRC and the president can only recommend how much MPs earn but cannot make a decision.
