Juncker is confirmed as president of European Commission
July 16 , 2014
Former Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker was confirmed as the next European commission president by a comfortable majority, winning 422 votes in the 751-seat parliament, according to media reports.
His appointment had been strongly opposed by Britain’s Prime Minister, David Cameron, who found little official support on the issue except from Hungary. On the other hand, 26 national leaders from the European Union backed Juncker.
Strongly defending the euro in his speech before the secret ballot, Juncker called for huge investments in jobs and infrastructure in Europe in the next five years.
