Japan's New Imperial Era: Reiwa

Reiwa is a name of the new Japanese imperial era as it was announced by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who held up a board with the characters handwritten on it. Later, PM Shinzo Abe addressed the nation explaining the meaning of “Reiwa”. He said that this new name of the era is made up of two characters which stand for “command” or “order” and “peace” and “harmony”. It was further explained that these names which are given to an era are used to mark time on the western calendar which also signifies the reign of each Japanese emperor known as “gengo”. The names of these eras appear on coins, driving licences, newspapers and official paperwork. Japan will start using this name from May 1 which will signify order and harmony.
