Japan heads for polls as Abe dissolves parliament

  • Shinzo Abe, the prime minister of Japan, dissolved parliament, seeking a new mandate in a snap election, according to media reports.

He will seek backing from voters for his controversial economic reforms and has delayed a hike in sales tax that has not been popular.

However, opinion polls suggest that support for Abe is low, and the decision to call for elections two years before schedule has puzzled many people.

The polls are slated for the middle of next month.
