Jacob Zuma, South Africa’s president, paid tribute to national football team captain Senzo Meyiwa, who was killed by robbers in a shooting that has shocked the nation, media reports say.
Meyiwa, the team’s goalkeeper, was shot at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home near Johannesburg.
Zuma said the country mourned the death “of this young footballer and team leader,” adding that words “cannot express” the shock at the loss.
Two armed robbers entered the house while a third waited outside, the police said. Meyiwa was shot in the chest before the attackers fled, according to the police.
