Italy plays down concerns over oil spill
July 21 , 2014
The ongoing operation to separate the Costa Concordia from Giglio island has led to a small oil spill.
A “small amount of hydrocarbons” was noticed and workers started cleaning the spillage, Italian officials said. But Maria Sargentini, who heads the project’s environmental supervisory committee, said there was “nothing to worry about.”
Greenpeace had earlier warned that toxic waste could spill out as the wrecked ship was towed away.
