December 31 , 2014
A major disaster was averted on Tuesday, 30 December, as Italy took control of a cargo ship carrying '700 migrants' and docked it safely at the Italian port of Gallipoli. According to media reports, the crew had abandoned the ship after setting it on an autopilot mode. The ship, which reportedly had Syrians and Kurds on board, was programmed to crash into a coast. As the ship full of migrants headed towards Italy, the port authorities sent six coast guard officials, who boarded the ship and took control.
