Italy: Anti-immigration rally attracts thousands in Rome
March 1 , 2015
An anti-immigration rally in Rome led by the Northern League’s Matteo Salvini has drawn thousands of people.
The right-wing Salvini, whose popularity is increasing in Italy, also spoke out against the EU and the government of prime minister Matteo Renzi at the rally. He accused Renzi of being "a pawn” of “some nameless person who wants to control all our lives from Brussels”.
A counter-demonstration, which saw left-wing parties, anti-racism activists and gay rights groups come together, was also held close to the Salvini rally in the Italian capital.
