Israeli PM calls for early general elections

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for an early general election in four months’ time.

The elections are due to take place in September, a year before he is legally required to seek a new mandate.

Netanyaho heads a centre-right coalition that includes his Likud party and Ehud Barak’s Labour party.

Media reports suggest the timing may be due to marred relations with the Nationalist Israel Beiteiunu Party, a junior coalition partner, over plans to require ultra religious Jews to undergo compulsory army service.

Netanyahu has been prime minister since 2009.
