November 24 , 2014
The Israeli cabinet has agreed on a controversial bill that gives official backing to the definition of the country as a nation-state of Jewish people, according to media reports.
The bill’s opponents which include a few ministers said the legislation did not reserve national rights for minorities. Human rights organizations have called it racist.
The bill, which could become basic law in Israel, seeks to recognize the Jewish character of Israel. Also, Jewish law would be institutionalized and Arabic delisted as the second official language.
