Israel launches airstrikes on Syria
May 4 , 2013
US officials reported that Israel launched an airstrike into Syria on Thursday night - early Friday targeting a site suspected of being a weapons warehouse. The primary target of the Israeli warplanes is believed to have been a site that stored chemical weapons or some other such arsenal to be delivered by the Syrian regime to Hezbollah and other militant outfits in Lebanon.
US officials believe this to be the second time Israel conducted airstrikes in Syria this year. On April 22, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon in Tel Aviv acknowledged Israeli fighter jets attack on a convoy of anti-aircraft missiles earlier in January. Syria is currently caught up in a civil war with rebel groups pitted against the regime of President Bashir Assad. The suspected stockpile of chemical weapons built up by the nation is causing a major concern to the U.S. and other nations.
