Israel, Hamas agree to 72-hour ceasefire
August 1 , 2014
It has been reported that Israel and Hamas have agreed to a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire after more than three weeks of fighting.
The temporary truce, brokered by the United States and United Nations, is expected to provide a crucial window for humanitarian relief. There will also be pressure on both sides to agree for a longer-term ceasefire. Palestinian and Israeli delegations are due to meet in Cairo for further talks.
In a statement, the Israeli government said the country had “accepted the UN/US proposal for a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire beginning 8 am Friday.”
