Israel, Hamas agree on short ceasefire

  • Agreeing to a humanitarian request by the United Nations in the wake of four Palestinian boys’ deaths in Israeli air strikes, Israel and Hamas agreed to a five-hour ceasefire.

Efforts are on meanwhile to put together a long-term cessation to hostilities.

Palestinian factions had agreed to accept the UN offer “for a cooling-down on the ground for five hours,” Hamas was quoted as saying.

The 10-day aerial bombardment by Israel has claimed more than 200 Palestinian lives in Gaza, most of them civilians. Rocket fire from Hamas killed one Israeli citizen.
