Islamic clothing, beards banned on buses in Chinese city
August 6 , 2014
Karamay, a city in the Muslim-dominated Xinjiang region of China, has banned residents with large beards or Islamic attire from using public buses, the local media has reported.
The items people are banned from wearing include niqabs, hijabs and burqas, reports said.
Xinjiang, home to Muslim Uighurs, has been rocked with violent clashes and attacks on civilians in the past several months. Hundreds of fatalities have been reported in the unrest.
Human right organizations have said the restrictions imposed in Karamay are “discriminatory”.
