Iron dome shoots down rocket
August 14 , 2013
Israeli military on Tuesday shot down a rocket launched from Egypt toward a Red Sea resort. This was the first time Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system did so successfully.
The incident happened after the heightened tension along the Egypt-Israel border. Responsibility for the attack has been claimed by an al-Qaeda-linked group. There is little known about this group, which was also responsible for killing eight people in an attack near Eilat in 2011. According to security officials, this Eilat attack was the group's attempt to disrupt the cooperation and strain ties with Egypt.
Reports say that the authorities haven't been able to confirm if the rocket had been launched from Sinai. The system had been stationed close to Eilat about three weeks ago due to security concerns.
