Ireland says yes to gay marriage in historic vote
May 24 , 2015
Ireland has voted in favor of legalizing gay marriage, the first country to do so by a popular vote.
Around 62% of the electorate of the Irish Republic cast their votes in support of same-sex marriage in what has been called a “social revolution”.
The results also reflect the diminishing clout of the country’s Catholic church.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the vote had demonstrated that Ireland was a country of “generous, compassionate, bold and joyful people”.
