Iraq's Kurdish region votes in controversial independence referendum

Amidst opposition from international and regional powerful forces, Iraq's Kurdish region voted in the controversial independence referendum on Monday. According to media reports, at least 73% of eligible voters had taken part in Monday's independence referendum. The Kurdish Regional Government reported that the referendum will give it a mandate to achieve independence from Iraq. Iraqi Kurdistan's independence referendum on Monday witnessed huge turnout and the streets of Kirkuk were filled as Kurds danced on the streets. The deputy prime minister of the KRG called it a “historical day”, as he voted at a polling station.
