Iraq conflict: Obama authorizes 'targeted airstrikes' against ISIS

  • American president Barack Obama has authorized “targeted airstrikes” to protect US personnel in Iraq and help the Iraqi military as Sunni militant group Isis continues to advance and seize more territory.

The president said his administration would do “whatever is necessary to protect our people.”

Among the immediate worries for the Obama administration is the safety of American staff and military advisers who are stationed in Irbil in Iraq’s Kurdish region.

The US has also airdropped food and water on Mount Sinjar as humanitarian assistance for people belonging to minority Iraqi communities fleeing persecution by Islamic State (ISIS).
