Iraq approves new government; Nuri al-Maliki is vice-president
September 9 , 2014
Iraq’s lawmakers have approved their new government, with Nuri al-Maliki, the former prime minister, becoming vice-president, according to media reports.
Haider al-Abadi, the prime minister, said nominations for the key posts of defense and interior minister would be presented before Parliament in one week.
Besides Maliki, former PM Ayad Allawi and Osama al-Nujaifi, the ex-Parliament speaker, are also vice presidents.
The political developments come at a time when Iraq faces a major crisis in the north, where the militant group Isis has seized a vast chunk of territory.
