Inspectors report progress in Syria

  • According to the weapons inspectors responsible for overseeing the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria, the initial progress in their mission has been encouraging.

The team that arrived in Syria on Tuesday includes experts from the United Nations as well as from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW); they mentioned that the documents handed over by Syria look good but further analysis is required and "some more questions remain to be answered."

The inspectors said they hope to "begin onsite inspections and the initial disabling of equipment within the next week."

The team has been given nine months to destroy the chemical arsenal.
