Indonesia polls: both candidates claim victory

  • Both candidates in Indonesia’s presidential elections claimed victory after polls closed, but it may take weeks before a true picture emerges.

Jakarta’s Governor Joko Widodo, who stressed the need to tackle social injustice and corruption during his election campaign, said he had emerged winner, citing an early post-poll count.

But his rival, the former Lieutenant-General Prabowo Subianto, told supporters that according to incoming data his side had “received the mandate of the people.”
