India to overtake China as world's most populous country by 2028
June 17 , 2013
India is set to overtake China as the world's most populous country by 2028, according to a report produced by the United Nations.
By that point, both nations will have a population of 1.45 billion people each.
Up until the middle of the century, India's population will continue to grow while China's will decline.
The UN has also estimated that the current global population of 7.2 billion will hit 9.6 billion by 2050.
The number is higher than previous estimates.
The reason for the rise in projection comes on the back of new information on fertility levels in high birth rate countries.
Researchers used data for 233 countries and areas to compile the report.
