Ice Wall to be built around Fukushima
September 4 , 2013
Given the dangerous radioactivity that continues to plague Fukushima, Japan is now planning on building an ice wall around the plant in order to keep the ground water separate from the dangerous water.
The project will cost the country US$473 million and will involve piping coolant through the walls that surround the plant.
In addition to the improvement in the plant's water treatment equipment, 400 metric tons of contaminated water is pumped out daily to cool the reactor.
Vice chairman of the Japan Atomic Energy said a permanent solution was required since freezing the ground around the site is challenging.
