September 19 , 2017
Hurricane Maria, which made landfall on Dominica as a Category 5 storm on Monday, is heading towards Puerto Rico. Maria is the strongest storm on record to hit Dominica. It intensified from Category 1 to Category 5 in less than a day. Two weeks ago Hurricane Irma battered the Caribbean Islands. As per the National Hurricane Center, winds scaled up to 260km/hr (160mph). Pertaining to “potentially disastrous” storm, Dominican Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, wrote on Facebook, “We shall survive by the grace of God.” Forecasters warned that heavy rainfall caused by the hurricane “could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.” Ahead of hurricane Maria's landfall, Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Russello, has declared a state of emergency.
