Hundreds protest in New Delhi over sex attack on seven-year-old girl
March 2 , 2013
Hundreds of people took to the streets of New Delhi on Friday following reports that a seven-year-old girl was sexually assaulted at school.
Police were forced to use batons to break up crowds outside a hospital in the Indian capital where the girl was being treated.
The protests broke out after the girl’s parents took her to lodge an official complaint at the local police station after which she was taken to the Sanjay Gandhi hospital in the city’s Mangolpuri area.
As the news spread, scores of residents and neighbours joined in the spontaneous demonstration.
Dr. Sanjay Kumar, one of those who examined the girl, said her injuries were consistent with rape.
Teachers and security guards at the government school are now being questioned over the alleged attack.
The demonstrations come just months after thousands across the country protested the fatal gang rape of a student on a New Delhi bus in December.
