Hugo Chavez recovering from cancer surgery complications
December 14 , 2012
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is recovering well after suffering bleeding during surgery for cancer in Cuba on Tuesday, his Communications Minister said on Thursday.
Ernesto Villegas said the 58-year-old president will require "proper time" to recover due to the complex nature of the procedure and its complications.
This is the president's fourth surgery since last year.
Chavez, who was re-elected in October, is due to be sworn in for a third term on January 10.
Chavez was first diagnosed with an undisclosed cancer in 2011 and has had repeated surgery in Cuba.
Nicolas Maduro has been named by Chavez as his preferred successor
According to the Venezuelan constitution, should the president leave office in the first four years of his term, an election must be held within 30 days.
Maduro, a former bus driver, is one of the president's closest advisers.
