April 1 , 2015
The hostage crisis in Turkey came to a bloody end with a prosecutor and the two gunmen holding him hostage killed after special forces entered the Istanbul courthouse.
The hostage, Mehmet Selim Kiraz, was the leading the investigation into the death of a 14-year-boy during the 2013 anti-government demonstrations.
A banned far-left group is believed to be responsible for taking him hostage.
The chief of the Istanbul police Selami Altunok said that the authorities negotiated with the hostage-takers for six hours but had to finally storm the building when gunshots were heard “from inside the prosecutor's office”.
