Hope to set up war crimes inquiry: Sri Lankan President
March 12 , 2015
Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena has said that he hoped to set up an inquiry within one month into war crimes allegedly committed during the civil war.
He, however, told the BBC that the UN will not be involved in the domestic war crimes inquiry.
Sri Lanka’s bloody civil war ended in 2009 with the defeat of the Tamil Tigers. Both the army and rebels have been accused of rights abuses.
Sirisena won the presidential election earlier this year, defeating his former ally Mahinda Rajapaksa.
