Hong Kong protests: Officials to meet students for talks
October 21 , 2014
Hong Kong government officials are due to meet student protesters for talks as pro-democracy demonstrations continue in the city, according to media reports.
The student leaders’ main demand is that the voters of Hong Kong should be allowed to choose their chief executive in 2017 without Beijing deciding on who can stand for the election. Beijing has indicated that meeting this demand is not on the cards.
Carrie Lam, the chief secretary, will head the talks from the government’s side. Five student leaders will represent the protesters.
