Hong Kong debates controversial political reform package amidst protests
June 17 , 2015
The Hong Kong government is discussing a contentious political reforms package ahead of voting later in the week.
The package is expected to give citizens the right to elect their chief executive in 2017 through a vote, but a pro-China committee will vet the candidates.
Last year, Hong Kong saw unprecedented pro-democracy demonstrations, led mostly by student groups.
Pro-democracy lawmakers in Hong Kong are likely to vote against the reform proposals in their present form, despite warnings from Beijing against doing so.
