Holland: Cabinet approves partial ban on face-covering veils in public areas
May 23 , 2015
The Dutch cabinet has backed a proposal to partially ban face-covering veils, including the Islamic burqa or niqab, in public areas such as hospitals and schools and on public transport.
Prime minister Mark Rutte, however, insisted that the bill did not have any “religious background.”
In a statement, the government said it was trying to “find a balance” between respecting people’s choice of clothes and the “importance of mutual and recognizable communication.”
