Historic meeting: Obama holds talks with Vietnam Communist Party leader
July 8 , 2015
President Barack Obama held talks with Nguyen Phu Trong, the Communist Party leader of Vietnam, in the first such meeting since the US and Vietnam normalized their relations two decades ago.
Acknowledging the “difficult history between our two countries”, Obama said that the US and Vietnam were, however, deepening cooperation.
The historic meeting at the White House comes 40 years after the Vietnam War ended and amid concern over China’s increasing assertiveness in the region.
Trong said that he was “convinced” that the ties between the US and Vietnam would “continue to grow” in future.
