High-profile rape cases to hit India's reputation
August 16 , 2013
Despite the introduction of tougher laws for sexual crimes, India continues to experience the same crimes over and over again.
The latest high-profile case is about a 7-year-old girl who got raped in a toilet compartment of a train in India.
An outcry had grown over the death of a 23-year-old woman who had been gang raped in Delhi. Supporters criticized the largest democracy in the world for failing to protect half of its population. Since then, the laws have toughed and death penalty for repeat offenders has been introduced but many continue to believe the mindset of the people in India remains the same.
Parents still prefer boys due to the issues of dowry and continue to get abortions based on sex. The society still values men more than women and the country continues to see such high-profile rape cases even after the brutal gang rape in December.
