Helmut Schmidt, former West German Chancellor, dies aged 96

  • Helmut Schmidt, the former West German Chancellor, has died aged 96.

    Schmidt, who served as Chancellor from 1974 to 1982, was a Social Democrat and one of the key persons behind the European Monetary System, which eventually led to the creation of the euro.

    In a tribute, Chancellor Angela Merkel described him as a "political institution". She said Germans had a "deep affection" towards him.  

    Martin Schulz, the European Parliament President, said Schmidt’s death marked “a turning point for Germany and Europe”.
