Global population expected to hit 9.7bn by 2050: UN report

  • The UN has said that despite a slowdown in the population growth rate, it is almost “inevitable” that the world’s population will reach 9.7 billion in 2050 from today’s figure of 7.3 billion.

The world population grew at 1.24% annually 10 years ago; that is now down to 1.18%. Declining fertility rates are leading to the slowdown, according to the UN report.

Nine countries, including India, Nigeria and the US, will contribute to half the world’s population growth till 2050, the report says.
