Ghulam Azam, controversial Islamist leader of Bangladesh, dies
October 24 , 2014
Ghulam Azam, the former leader of Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami party, had died aged 91.
Azam was given a 90-year jail term last year for his role in the 1971 war of independence. After the verdict was announced last year, Jamaat-e-Islami supporters clashed with the police.
A court held him guilty of five charges including conspiracy and incitement. He was accused of playing a key role in the establishment of militia groups that killed thousands of people during the war.
