July 25 , 2012
Ghana's President John Atta Mills has died in hospital in the capital Accra.
A statement from his office said the 68-year-old, who was suffering from throat cancer, died a few hours after being admitted. No further details were given.
Vice-President John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as his replacement in a ceremony.
Atta Mills had ruled the West African nation since 2009. He came to power after narrowly beating a candidate from the then governing New Patriotic Party in polls in December 2008.
Atta Mills' illness was never officially confirmed but was the center of much debate.
He always insisted he was healthy and planned to run in December's election.
