Germany Gears Up for September Election
August 13 , 2017
German Chancellor Angela Merkel (who is in power for almost 12 years) kicked off her campaign for the September 24 election after returning from her three-week Alpine holiday. Current Forsa polling suggests that Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in coalition with Christian Social Union (CSU) party is ahead with 40 per cent support but will be short of the required majority. Poll shows that Social Democratic Party (SDP) is currently enjoying 23 per cent support. With leftist Martin Schulz taking charge of SDP from Sigmar Gabriel in January 2017 has given it a momentum. Smaller parties may play important role in formation of new government.
