German leaders take part in Muslim community rally
January 14 , 2015
German leaders including Chancellor Angela Merkel attended a rally in Berlin organized by Muslim community groups in support of religious freedom and tolerance, media reports said.
The event’s aim was to condemn last week’s terror attacks in France and express solidarity with the victims, the organizers said.
However, the rally was also an attempt to provide a counter-narrative to the anti-Islamization protests being spearheaded by the Pegida group in Germany.
Speaking on the occasion, President Joachim Gauck said Germany’s increasing diversity had made it a “successful and likable” country.
