Gaza conflict: calls for 'sustainable ceasefire' after fighting resumes
August 9 , 2014
Renewed fighting between Israel and Hamas after a three-day truce claimed five lives in Gaza.
The United States has said a “sustainable ceasefire” was the need of the hour. The United Nations described further civilian casualties as “intolerable”.
But Israel said its strikes were in response to Hamas’s rocket fire. Hamas, which controls Gaza, said it rejected the ceasefire’s extension as Israel had not met its demands.
Over 1900 Palestinians, a majority of them civilians, have been killed so far in the month-long conflict.
