French Centrist leader backs Francois Hollande
May 4 , 2012
French Centrist leader Francois Bayrou has announced his support for Socialist Francois Hollande ahead of Sunday’s runoff presidential elections.
Bayrou came in fifth place in the first round of voting with 9.1 percent.
If his supporters follow suit and vote for Hollande, it would strike a significant blow to incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy.
Earlier this week, far-right leader Marine Le Pen refused to endorse both Sarkozy and Hollande, telling supporters she would cast a blank vote.
On the last day of major campaigning, Hollande led in the opinion polls.
Sarkozy could become the first French president since Valery Giscard d’Estaing in 1981 to not win a second term.
