French Army Takes on Militants in Mali Forest

As per reports, French land and air forces engaged with Islamist militants in a forest in Mali, close to the border with Burkina Faso. One French soldier is believed to have died.
France has over 4000 soldiers deployed in Mali where Islamist militants have been repeatedly carrying out attacks on government and French forces stationed there. The violence has spread to both sides of the border.
Mali has been under a state of emergency and on Saturday the National Assembly voted to extend the emergency by another six months.
France remains committed to its former colony providing security assistance to the government there. Despite active presence, militants have been periodically carrying out jihadi attacks.
